Another No Sound Problem Post

Hi
The Windows sounds (startup, shutdown, maximize, etc.) work fine. However if I try to play a song on any media player or watch a video on a website or player it looks as though it plays but no sound is made. Speakers are fine. I looked through the forums and I couldn't figure out why the Windows sounds worked while everything else didn't. Please help me! :'(

P.S. It's a shared computer and I believe, but I'm not sure, that this problem began after it had been reformatted... dunno if that matters I really don't know too much about this stuff...
