Sound drivers missing - no sound!

i rescued my laptop from vista by reinstalling XP and found my sound drivers missing.

when i check the CONTROL PANEL/SOUND AND AUDIO DEVICES
it tells me NO AUDIO DEVICE

when i check the DEVICE MANAGER i see no errors with the audio drivers.
but i do see errors with OTHER DEVICES;
-Base system device
-Ethernet Control
-PCI device

i have tried the dell site for the drivers...useless
i've tried the MS audio driver from the HP site...useless as well,
i have even downloaded every microsoft audio driver but still haven't found the right one (maybe i missed it, i dont know)
but i have no idea what to do next

Try this download but uninstall any audio driver you have tried in device manager http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOU...o-Driver.shtml

I have already tried this driver and just tried it again,
it didn't work.
