Network traffic problem on one PC
Quick version of problem:
When copying files from computer A to computer B (onto a shared folder), after about 40 megs, explorer crashes. Help?
Windows XP & Server 2003 machines
Switched 100mbit network
Onboard Marvell Yukon network adaptor (Computer A)
Long version of problem:
Ok, this is really the strangest thing; I have never had an error like this. Computer A cannot send large files constantly to any other computer on my network (including the server). When sending files across the network, the usage appears to be in the 2-3mbit range (over a 100mbit connection) from Computer A’s Task Manager. From the receiving end, Computer B’s Task Manager reports usage between 60-70mbit, a normal transfer bandwidth. This in itself is odd; shouldn’t comp A’s output equal Comp B’s input?
Then, all of a sudden, at a certain point during the transfer, Computer A reports a solid 3mbit transfer load (no variance) and Computer B reports 100% receiving throughput. Instantly explorer.exe crashes jams. Deleting the process does nothing; the computer must be reset.
I’ve tried pulling files off of Computer A, by sitting at Computer B and copying them over. No problems.
I’ve tried rebooting, re-installing the drivers, different user accounts. No change.
Computer A has 2 network adaptors. I’ve tried every combination and none of them affect the problem.
The internet connection works fine from computer A (as far as I can tell).
I can logon to my domain.
All other computers can send large files constantly.
All cables and switches have been tested.
Every other computer can transfer files just fine.
Is this a problem with windows or the adaptor more likely?
Are there some problems with any services that might be running that I could disable?
Does anyone know of any third party software that might cause this?
I’m getting another network adaptor in a few days. It might solve the problem. Anyone got any better ideas? I’ve been at this for days; I seriously can’t re XP this thing unless there are no other options. It would take a very long time because of the amount of software on it. I’m just fishing in the dark at this point.
