Talking Error loading blah\blah\ctor.dll The specified module could not be found

Dear Ma’ams and Sirs,

Thanks for tolerating.

1. Version of XP

xp pro SP2

2. Hardware setup

Dell XPS T450 with Powerleap 1.4 GHz Celery with massive 256 kB L2 cache plus 768 MB speedy PC100 ram

3. What exactly happened leading up to the problem

Was getting Blue Screen of Death every few hours for a few months. Message: "Memory Parity Error Blah Blah." Didn't troubleshoot. Lived with it. Kept processor usage to a minimum, such as not playing video or running distributed computing project, and that helped keep the computer from crashing.

Yesterday, both of my sound devices stopped working. Creative X-Fi Fidelity [PCI] soundcard stopped playing yesterday. Although Windows reported [driver] was installed correctly, it no longer appeared in Sounds and Audio Devices. Separate cheap-o USB-Sound-dongle stopped loading on power-up, but unplugging and replugging dongle successfully got it to load. Was able to use USB dongle. But even after re-installing the X-Fi, the card refused to wake up.

Went to Staples to get a [PCI] soundcard. Got a [darned] Creative Soundblaster Audigy SE.

Removed X-Fi card, tossed into garbage. Did not try to uninstall drivers, software-package, or anything.

Inserted Audigy card. Against Creative instructions, instead of using CD for installation the way Creative told me to, I let Windows get drivers online. Minimal software bloat would have been sufficient for me, but resulting soundcard controls had inactive Tone sliders. That won't do.

So I stuck in the CD, and loaded all the bloat, plus the drivers. Ran Creative's "Update" tool, which did some stuff. All of it took a freaking one-and-one-half hours, longer than an nVidia card installation. But I still have inactive Tone controls. The equalizer has a dozen sliders that appear to be active (they slide up and down), but moving them has no effect on the playback sound.

Decided to uninstall, and reinstall properly.

Tried to use Add/Remove to uninstall everything Creative, including -of course- the X-Fi stuff. Then "searched" C drive for "Creative," and removed remaining Creative folders, files, and shortcuts.

4. Exact error messages

There are a few things that I think are from the X-Fi installation that Add/Remove was unable to remove. Before I do a proper, fresh install (this time) of the Audigy, I want to get rid of the remaining Creative entries in the Add/Remove list: Creative Audio Console, Creative Media Toolbox, and Creative Media Source. Maybe if I start really fresh, the next Audigy installation will include active Tone [and Equalizer] controls.

When I try to Remove either of those three remaining entries, I get a pop-up, "Error loading C: \ program files \ common files \ Installsheild \ Professional \ Runtime \ 09 \ 01 \ Intel32 \ Ctor.dll The specified module could not be found."

The file is there. I don’t know why it can’t be found. It's version 9.1.0.429. I did a regsvr32 to it, Windows said it was Successful, but still no joy on Add/Remove for those three items.

Maybe someone can help me figure out what to do with the Add/Remove problem.

Also, does anyone want to place a bet whether fixing the dll problem, successfully clearing the three Creative items with the Add/Remove, and doing the proper, fresh install will provide Tone controls for my soundcard?

Also, hoping the Blue Screen Memory Parity crashing will go away after having disposed of the old sound card. Hope springs eternal.

5. Any antivirus, firewall software you are running

Computer Associates antivirus is up to date, SpyBlocker realtime monitor, myNetwatchman, and Windows Firewall is On.

Thanks in advance. I'll owe you.

Dear Dave,

I downloaded and replaced. I re-regsvr32'ed, whatever that does.

Tried to "Remove Programs" on those three items, again. It's still complains "error loading the dll, and the specified module could not be found.

Still with you.
