Hardware change

Due to my motherboard exploding, i have had to practicaly rebuild my PC. Now that it is constructed, I am unable to start windows. All i get to is;

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause"

I would prefer not reinstalling windows, as the version i have was tailored to the motherboard that blew up, and would erase all my data.

Any help would be appreciated.

You have no choice but to format and reinstall XP. To get your files off the old hard drive you will have to connect it to another PC as a slave and copy your important files off to a flash drive ect.

thanks for that.

thats what i was afraid off...i have a laptop (which im using now), and an external harddisk (USB connection), ive looked about online and there is an adapter i could use to plug my desktop HDD into my laptop, and then into the external. might ask a techy friend to do it for me though...

The other problem is, the PC came with windows meant for my old PC. I reformatted it before with an upgraded graphics card, and it refused to use it, using the onboard graphics until i switched them off in the bios. What will having a new motherboard and graphics card do to it
