problems with a codec for media player

Im trying to play a video but it is missing the codec and when it tries to connect to the server to download the codec, it fails every time. is there another place i can get the codec (actually i dont even know what codec i need) or anything else i can do. thanks

What type of file are you trying to view? mpg, avi etc.
Personally, i use Irfanview, which can show practically anything, and is kind to the resources.

its an mpeg file. and obviously windows media player plays other mpeg files without a problem. maybe i will give that one that you mentioned a try. thanks.
