No sound XP Pro

OK, here's what's happening:

Dell Optiplex running Windows XP Pro-- Previously it was running Windows 98, and the sound worked then. I did a clean install of XP Pro, and now there is no sound whatsoever. When I tried to update the drivers for the sound card, I discovered that the card was ancient--it's no longer supported by the manufacturer, so I replaced the sound card. STILL NO SOUND. So, I tried removing it in the Device Manager... Well when I turned the PC back on it wanted to reinstall it--but is unable to find different .dll files. So I keep downloading them one at a time but when I do that the PC tells me that the target file is newer than the one I downloaded. All I know is that I have done every single thing I can think of, there's STILL no sound, and I feel like a fool. PLEASE HELP ME!
