Problems with AC'97

Hope someone can help with this...

Computer worked fine one minute and then teh next day there was no sound. Checked devices and had the exclamation mark next to Realtek AC'97 and the MPU-401 compatible Midi device. Checked the status of both and had the code 39 message. Clicked on the troubleshooter and it stated to uninstall the device and then go to add new hardware in the control panel. So I procedd to do this and according to the new hardware window I got the message "There was a problem installing this device Muoltimedia Audio Contoller. An error has occurd during the installation of this device. The data is invalid." Checked the device manager agin and this time I had the code 28 message. Tried updated drivers for the sound card in safe mode and regular mode and still the same message. From here I decided after reading other people who had a simular problem to check motherboard for driver updates as well as driver updates for the realtek ac'97. Although there were not any other problems in the device manager I did the updated drivers for the motherboard and when I check the device manager, this time the device (audio contoller) was listed under other devices and the MPU-401 was listed as unknown device in the sound, video, and game contollers. The message this time was code 1. Tried the updated drivers as well as the installation disk that was supplied by the motherboard manufacturer and I am back to the code 28 situation. Tried again with the same results. It is pretty frustrating. I usually figure these things out but this one has me stumped.

Okay everyone, somehow I was able to finally download all the drivers without any code messages. But there is still a problem with sound. Windows Media Player has sound again but when I start up the computer and shut down the computer I do not have any sound and I do not have the volume button in the lower right hand side of my screen. When I go to sounds and audio devices in the control panel the volumes tab it states no audio device so I cannot do anything to increase the volume etc. In the sounds tab if I select a sound and try to preview it I get the message "Windows cannot play the sound %SystemsRoot%\media\Windows XP startup.wav. Your sound card may be in use." I really do not understand why this is going on and giving me this message. Any thoughts as to why???

Thanks for any help. Am open to any and all suggestions...

Go here to Gigabyte and install the Via 4 in 1 chipset - then restart your comp - then install audio again - if this does not work then you will need to check that audio is [Enabled] in the BIOS - let me know how you go on

Okay everyone....

I finally have everthing back...sound that is. After my last post I only had sound in things like media player, etc. As far as sound devices I had nothing but the message "your sound card may be in use." So I went back into the hardware manager and found something in it that my other computer which is neary identical didn't. In the sound, video and game controllers it had a device called unimodem full-duplex audio device. Then I clicked on properties and just disabled it for the time being and now everthing has sound and I have the volume icon is my system tray. Really do not know much about this device but before I mess with anything else like getting rid of it, I would like to know more about this device and what it does. But now everything is back to normal as far as I can tell so I will leave well enough alone until further investigation.

Just wanted to thank everyone for all their input and I hope that anyone else who is having these issues can benifit from my experience with it and can find the information in these post useful. I will check in form time to time and post any findings found on how my system is running.

By the way, this is how I got everthing back to normal...
After many attempts on installing the drivers and having them fail, I looked back into my notes and found to update files that as far as I can guess a spyware or malware messed with somehow. What happened was I got a window that stated that KB923191 was overwritten or something like that and it need to be fixed, repaired and to reinstall the update. Then in the same day I got another window with the same message but for update KB924667. Went to Microsoft to find them and only one of them downloaded to my computer and the other had a problem or what ever. Well which ever one it was, all I could do was close the window since it would not download and when I did that there was a window that stated something to the fact that my system may not function properly. That is about the time my sound started acting up. Fortunately back in the days of the first release of xp2 and you had to download a bunch of patches and fixes when you switched to xp2, I obtained form Microsoft a XP service pack 2 cd which meant if I ever had to reinstall a clean install of windows xp (the first edition) I did not have to go to the update to obtain all the updates to get to xp2. Well, since I had these two files messed up somehow and I was at the point I was about to reformat and do a clean install of xp, I decided I would slip in this cd to see what it would do...I mean what is the worst it could do at this point, rewrite files I already had and if it harmed my system, I was going to do a clean install anyways. Long story short, it did not do anything out of the ordinary, still had issues of no sound. Just for kicks, i decided to see if I could download the drivers for the sound card and presto...files started transfering and when it was finished there were no exclamation points in the device manager...yeah. But I still had no sound other than media player, etc until I didabled the unimodem full-duples media device...now I can enjoy the sounds of my computer starting up and all....

Hope this helps any one else...I will keep my eye to the forums

Thanks all...
