Starting Slow from Icons

Hi all:

I have a question about my computer loading slow from the icons on my desktop.

I use XP-home operating system. My system is free of any viruses etc. as far as I know. I use three paid-for software programs and one free one to clean regularly.

As I understand it this slow loading is caused by one or several programs running in the background. I also understand that I can see what these running programs are by going to ‘msconfig” in Run at Start, and getting ‘System Configuration Utility’ and the clicking on “Start Up’ tab.

Doing this I find 4 - .exe files, 13 - Program Files and 4 more PROGRAM FILES (in capital letters).

Question: Can I ‘Disable' all 21 of these programs and if so will it hurt any of my other functions on my computer.

Thank you,
proqman
