Help, help! Slow loading programs!

Hi all:

I have a question about my computer loading slow from the icons on my desktop or other software programs.

My system is free of any viruses or trogons etc. as far as I know. I use three paid-for software programs and one free one to clean regularly.

As I understand this slow loading could be caused by one or several programs running in the background. But on my ‘System Configuration Utility’ when I go into ‘msconfig’ and ‘Start Up’ tab and disable all files that are there; I still have the problem of slow loading.

Question: Can anyone of you very wise and smart people out there tell me what might be wrong with my computer?

I so do not want to clean off my hard drive reload XP and start over again.

If it is slow response from clicked icons, then startup list disable won't help. It may even cause problems.

What is your machines config? Memory size etc. Pagefile size? Have you defraged recently?

I have 139 GB of free space on my internal hard drive. There are only 9.5 GB used. Plenty off room.

I defrag often but to be on the save side I just did it again. The defrag came out OK.

And also this afternoon ran to completion all my 4 antivirus software. Nothing but some cookies.

Still every icon on my desktop loads very slow. I tried several icon's of the programs I have internally in my computer. All three took three minutes or more to load from the desktop.

And just several minutes ago when I went to log on my home page from the Internet start up icon on my desktop it took over 3 minutes to come up. But once up it works just fine. I went to this web page from my favorites in just a few seconds.

MY Internet connection is Comcast Broadband, one of the fastest out there. So it should not be that.

Can anybody help or do I have to go through all the rigamaroll of cleaning off my total hard drive.

Worth a try, since it will update explorer.

Maybe you have a background service running etc.
