CD player Problems!

Have Windows XP with AMD Athlon 1200 CPU and 600+ memory. Most of the time after I boot up, I can access the CD player one (1) time. After that I keep getting messages that the CD tray is empty when it isn't. Retrying doesn't help! I have to go to device manage and remove the CD player from the system, reboot and then the CD player works, usually just once. I have a second hard disk drive with Windows 98SE and have the same problems with the CD player! Could it be that the CD device is defective? When Windows XP won't recognize the CD player, the light on the CD player flashes for five or ten seconds and a little CD icon flashed next to the pointer on my screen. Then they both quit and I have to delete the CD and reboot!

what is the exact make and model of the cd player, maybe a firmware update will fix it.

also have you checked the IDE conection and made sure it is pushed it in properly are you using the 1 IDE cable for your two HDD you are not sharing your CD ROM with a HDD on an IDE cable are you??.

have you checked that you have DMA enabled go HERE it tells you how to set it in 98 and XP
