Generic Host Processes For Win32 Services

Windows XP home edition [sp2], OE7, Mailwasher

For some reason my outlook express has stopped opening when the computer starts, all the settings keep changing and when I try to change the account back to its rightful settings the screen turns blue, I get message - generic host processes for win 32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close - before the computer turns off.

If I don’t attempt to open OE7 or use Internet explorer my computer will work but it is taking far longer to load and often hangs for ages. I have tried system restore, I have tried safe mode and I'm now on the verge of cleaning and re-installing all programs from the start, this will be the sixth time I have done this.

I have found out there is a Microsoft patch for this problem but it does not seem to work [could be my fault by doing something wrong?] I have also found out if I take sp2 out and just have sp1 the computer works fine except for every two or three minutes a message pops up telling me my computer is at serious risk and to get some program to check my drives.

Any advice how to either install the patch or sort out this mess will be gratefully accepted.

I suggest a system scan.

Thanks for you replies

I have mucked about all night and managed to find the correct patch - I save it to an external hard drive and reinstalled sp2. As soon as this was completed I went to the external hard drive and loaded the patch and I'm pleased to report that for the past 3 hours I have not had a blue screen or shutdown - I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my fumbling around has at last worked.

All the best to the two posters who tried to help me - blessings to you both and your clans.
