Question Idle curiosity.

Why can't file names contain \ / : * ? " < > |

I can't find anything in any of my books and the internet is surprisingly lacking.

They are special characters used in certain areas or operations e.g.

operators, < > more than and less than.
*, wildstar.
/, used as a seperator on the command line

You get the idea?
