Angry No hard drives detected | Disk Boot Failure | BSOD Kernel Data Inpage Error

Hi Everyone...

I will try to give as much information regarding my problem(s) as I can, I am very new to working with hardware and the motherboard etc and am at the end of my tether. I have a friend who will help to "fix" the PC and I would like some more info if possible as to where we can start / what could be the problem.... I am sorry this may be a very long post

Althought this might sound strange I have no idea what model of PC I am using, although I know it is a HP and I am running XP Pro, the PC is approx 3 - 4 years old I think.

The problem started out of the blue for no apparant reason, the only change I can recall being made to the PC shortly before I acquired it is that 512mb RAM was added to the existing 512mb, equalling just over 1g of RAM.

The computer was up and running with no problems for the first few weeks I had it, infact it was great, fastest / smoothest running PC I have ever used.

Out of the blue the PC rebooted and launched XP in a temporary user account, after checking the control panel, I found that my user account was corrupted and all of the setting had been reset. Thinking this was the problem I deleted my user account and created a new one.

A full system virus scan found no underlying problems and everything appeared fine.

The next day out of the blue I get a BSOD, with STOP error message... Kernel Data Inpage Error and various codes (I have not had chance to make note of these yet but I am sure the first one was 0x0000007A)

When I attempted to reboot, I get the error message DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

This error page is also showing that the disk drives have not been detected.

I have managed to get the PC to boot, after a friend changed around the RAM, this has happened 2/3 times now and the PC will run perfectly for 12 hours or so and then shut down and reboot with the DISK BOOT FAILURE message, I also noticed as the PC rebooted a message appeared stating that boot priority had been changed.

I will now list the info shown on the DISK BOOT FAILURE SCREEN and some of the BIOS Settings....

After 4 years the HDD is a strong possibility, though sagging PSU can show probs with the hard drive that don't actually exist.
so,
The HDD is busted. sounds like it.
The data cable or power cable is not properly connected or are faulty..... Possible, since the innards have been disturbed and you said touching the insides to do the ram got it working again.
The mainboard has a problem.
Possibly the power supply could be at fault. This can manifest as a hard drive prob.

I would try substitutes and see what happens.

same problem

Hi, I have the same problem. I was looking at a web site an all of a sudden i have the blue screen of death. It said kernel data inpage error and then "dumping physical memory". then when it started again it said book failure and insert system disk.

Have I lost everything on my hard drive? I haven't inserted the system disk because it will delete everything for sure. Is there a way I can still get some IMPORTANT items off of my hard drive before this thing goes kaput?

any help is much appreciated,
Jessie

Talking

It wont delete everything as system disc gives you the option to repair by pressing R when prompted to repair or f3 to quit before formatting.
It might possibly be disc failure or boot sector virus,I don't really know of any new ones in regard to viruses as I haven't moderated on virus forum for about 4 years, suggest you try to repair using system disc and failing that back up valuable data and reload your system,if you cannot boot windows normally in anyway try loading a live cd Kanotix is easy and access windows hard drive that way, down load to usb key any valuable data required, repartition with Kanotix if you wish as well as it has a reliable partition manager .
If you cannot hot plug hard drive with Kanotix live cd you are most likely to have a defunct HDD or damaged partition as Kanotix hotplugs all devices b4 booting up.
good luck

Last post was for Jessinator, but advise Diane to attempt to use the same method after checking IDE tapes to hard disc and motherboard,if you have Large amounts of data to back up you can save data from windows HDD on-line with secure ftp site like sourceforge or even windows sky drive, although the latter takes a loooooong time,ATB.
Diane also set your boot priority to boot from cd drive as primary boot device, good luck to you both.
To Wipe Partition prior to reload.
If you cannot find partition manager on Kanotix live cd,go to bottom desktop panel and click on the linux icon -go to installer and partition manager tab is in bottom left side on first page of installer.
format partition, format in fat32 and save, close installer and it will ask if you wish to save /rebuild MBR and click yes.shut down Kanotix and remove disk when prompted ,insert windows disk and reboot, load windows and when prompted reformat in NTFS.
