Memory Upgrade?

I just bought a 1GB DDR to upgrade my memory but when I put it in, it makes a wierd noise and it doesnt start up. Do I need to of them in order to work?

It all depends if the memory is compatible with your MB.

Well I believe its compatable but when I replace one of them, it makes a funny noise when I turn on the computer. Plus for some reason I have like three of them. Is there any specific one I should put it in? I have a Dell Optiplex GX270.
