XP won't boot after install

I have a problem. I just installed windows XP pro on a Compaq Presario 5000 which had Windows 2000 Pro in it. I put the windows xp setup disk in the CD drive and does its normal thing. Reformats the hard drive fine, then installs files fine. The first 3 steps of the installation galls o good. then ask me to enter compter name, workgroup, time/date and enter key code. The next step does the actual install of windows network setting etc. Then when thats complete, the computer reboots and the windows XP logo with the black background and the "loading staus bar" startup just freezes and nothing happens.

When I installed Windows 2000 pro, there wasn't a problem, but with XP there is.

Is the anyone who can provide me possible solutions in resolving this problem (i.e. memory/IDE replacement, etc)

I am running on a 80GB HD, 256Mb memory, 1Ghz AMD Athalon processor

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance....
