Angry Log in freeze

Hi

I am having prtoblems when I boot my computer after its been switched off for a while. On the first log in of the day its as if the keyboard will not respond and you cannot type in your password the mouse works ok. This is the same for all three accounts I have set up. If I re start the pc using the mouse the keyboard appers to work on the second start. I am using XP home which was pre installed on a compaq pc which I have only had a few weeks.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks Tony

Not a solution but....

Have you tried unplugging the KB then plugging it back in?? Does that make the KB respond?

There is more to it but that would be a good starting point.

OK

So this morning after pc had been off for 9 hours on switching on the keyboard would not again function. Unplugged keyboard from ps2 port with pc on a number of time but it still did not work.

Used mouse to restart computer and the keyboard is ok again. Ps when PC boots it boots with num lock light on. When keyboard does not work there is no num lock light on and you cant switch it on , keyboard appears totally dead.

This only seems happens after the machine has been of for any period ie overnight !

Bit stuck again now, as was metioned in the reply, theres more to it than this !

Hope someone can help

Tony

Do you have any USB devices which act as alternate keyboard/mice? e.g. a tablet with a separate mouse or pen?

Sometimes such USB devices causes confusion on boot up - especially when they are on older type hubs.

Try disconnecting all your USB devices before your "cold" powerup.

Thanks for your reply
Will try what u have suggested. As it happens I have a logitech optiacl wireless mouse connected to a usb2 on the rear of the computer. This is using the standard XP divers not the logitech supplied ones. Do you think this could be causing the problem.

There is a USB hub also connected which has a HP 950c printer and a scanjet 3300c scanner connected.

Is it more likley to be the mouse. would it be best to try its most up to date drivers. Should I try not using the hub at all.

Thanks for your Help.

I solved my problem by buying a new hub and installing the trouble device on that.

Once you've determined that is indeed the problem, you can experiment with work arounds - e.g. just plugging the trouble device directly to the secondary port instead of a hub; buying a second hub, etc.
