How do I make my sound device work?

Hi!

I had a computer crash a few days ago, and when I used the Windows XP
Recovery CD, I lost all sound! In the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties part of the Control Panel, I have the following listed under the Hardware section:

C-Media AC 97 Audio Device
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Media Control Devices
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Video Codecs

As you can see, I have NO Sound Devices listed. Also, I have received the
Error 10 message when I tried playing any kind of sound, and when I try to play a music CD through Windows Media Player, I get the following message:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

When I click on More Information, I get the following message:

0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation. You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again. Error ID = 0xC00D11BA, Condition ID = 0x0000

I do have a sound card, since my music CD's worked fine before the computer crash. My sound card though is part of the motherboard and not separate. I alos got software drivers with the computer I bought, but for some reason I'm still not getting any sound with the drivers I did install.

I also got another error message that said something to the effect that there were no 'mixer' drivers found, which, I gather, is what puts the speaker 'icon' on the toolbar and which controls the sound.

Anyway, I have no idea of what to do. I don't have the motherboard CD, which I'm not sure if my computer came with one or not, which would maybe have installed the needed sound device for me. If anyone knows how I can install the sound device program or how to go about finding out what the make and model of my mother board is, and where to find the drivers for it, that would be great! Thaks to all!

Hi, I had exactly the same problem and had an annoying "beep" when there was an error. I don't know if you've solved this problem yet but i'll help you anyway.

- Download the file "aida32" from http://majorgeeks.com/download181.html, or just Google it.
- Double click on the file "aida32", once your in click on "Motherboard", then click "Motherboard" again, then at the top it should say your "Motherboard Name" with the name beside it.
- Then google the name of it, my driver was called "MSI 845E Max (MS-6566E)", so i typed in on google "download MSI 845E Max sound driver", then downloaded it and it works fine.

If you still have any problems just reply to this message.

Hope this helped
