XP Pro boots to black on Vaio Notebook

Sony VGN-T250P notebook
Windows XP Professional
Kaspersky virus software

I was using this computer connected to a plasma TV and it was working fine. The computer had been on for a couple of days since I used it last. When I went to use it yesterday, it was locked. Coundn't get to Task Manager to close programs or anything else so I had to turn off power and try to restart.

Now when I power it up, the screen flashes one time but remains black except for a little color in the lower left corner. If I push cntr alt del, it tries to restart but stops at the same black screen.

Here is what I have tried:

1. Booting from a Windows bootable CD
2. Accessing bios at boot (it won't take me there)

I give up. Any help is welcome and sincerely appreciated.

So it works on a tv but not it's own screen?

Sorry I wasn't clear about that. It is no longer connected to the TV.

Well, does it still display on a tv now, or an external monitor?

No. It doesn't display on either. Only a flicker and then black screen except for a bit of color in the lower left corner. The image is the same whether connected to an external screen or just the computer monitor.

The fact the image is the same in both cases means I'm tempted to say the video section is defective.
