Toshiba Satellite L35-S2316 prob
A friend bought one of these with Vista Home Basic and wanted to change the Op. Sys to Win XP Pro. We were able to find a workable graphics driver (Packard Bell) but need XP drivers for sound and also SM Bus controller. The wireless adapter appears to be ok in control panel but doesn't seem to scan for closeby networks??
Can anyone help with these problems? I would be most grateful if you could.

Your notebook has the Ati Radeon Xpress 200M chipset, and display driver, the driver is here at Ati it, it has the Gart and Southbride drivers which are the chipset included. One point Ati needs the M$ net framework drivers to be installed first. Win Update, custom install will show this driver if you need it or install from Ati http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/x...grated-xp.html
audio is Realtek, but Toshiba do not list if AC'97 or HD both drivers here

"Bookworm", I already had the ATI Radeon Xpress 200M display driver installed ( I used a Packard Bell driver) and it seems to work OK. But I downloaded and tried the one you recommended thinking it might also have MB drivers but it came back stating it had no drivers compatible with my Op. Sys. I did download and installed the Realtek HD drivers and sound now works.
Now my remaining problems in Device Manager are 1) "Modem device on High def audio bus" and 2) "SM Bus controller".
If you have any suggestions for these two I would appreciate it. And, thank you so much for the help so far......I now have sound!

I could only get specs from Toshiba Get Everest, copy and paste the Computer / Summary section it's the chipset drivers that are needed, I suspect that they are Vista INF files

Here is the link to the Product specification Http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/cont...L35-S2316.pdf#
I don't have Everest but I use Aida32 essentially the same. For motherboard chipset it just says "unknown". In the spec sheet under "Processor and Chipset" it lists Intel Celeron M Processor 440, 1.86 1MB L2, 533 MHz FSB, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M chipset.
I also ran an Intel utility that detects what Intel chipset is on the motherboard. None was detected so I think I should revisit the ATI website and see if a download from there will cure my problems? I wasn't aware that ATI was more than graphics.
I will let you know if I figure this bad boy out and any other comments you may have will be appreciated.
Thanks

I downloaded and installed the ATI chipset driver and that took care of the SM Bus Controller error. Now the modem driver is needed but I can't find a product name so we may just live with this glitch since we won't be using dialup anyway. That leaves the Wireless LAN problem. The Atheros adapter appears to be OK in device manager but I uninstalled it and downloaded the driver again making sure it was for XP. But when installing it, it asks that the card be inserted?? Maybe we need to buy a wireless card to get this feature to work. Toshiba could do much better with supplying a user manual!!
Thanks again Bookworm

Had a look at the wireless lan, installed on lots of models, this is the download for a A105-S171 for XP http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...l_doc s=false
your model only shows this for XP http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...l_doc s=false
but Atheros under Vista for your model shows all these models http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...all_docs=false

"Bookworm"
I tried your links and most of the drivers were for Vista but I was able to get a driver and utility from Driverguide.com for the Atheros LAN. I re-booted and did not get the BSOD but when I ran the ACU utility one test ailed...radio not turned on. I again toggled the Fn F8(radio antennae icon) with no success. I think I have reached the limit on this project. I will tell my Nephew that he should consider buying a PCMCIA WiFi card.
And, anyone reading these threads should think twice before trying to replace Vista with XP. Micro$oft is making it very difficult to do. I don't think Uncle Bill wants us going backward. LOL.
Thanks to you Bookworm; your help was appreciated.
Cheers
Charlie

I got the Atheros driver from Windows Update. It works fine. I didn't have to do anything, aside from select it under "Optional Hardware" or whatnot. Got the SMBus fix from the deconstructed ATI package (found via the link from bookworm in comment #2). I actually got the modem driver from Toshiba's Vista driver package -- the trick is to simply extract the zip contents from the exe using zip software, then pointing Device Manager at that driver. (Caveat: It gave me a warning, and I haven't yet tested that the modem in fact works.) I still need to find a video driver that works (the actual ATI video driver doesn't), but I'm not terribly worried. Worst-case, it can get 1024x768.
It's sad when you have to buy an older OS separate from your computer just to get a reasonable user experience...

Could you be a little more specific when you say "Deconstructed ATI package"? I downloaded and ran the link in comment #2 as well and it did not work.
Any help would be appreciated
Thank you

Sure. As I recall, I followed the "Individual driver download packages and Avivo™" link and downloaded the South Bridge Driver (4 of 5).
Anyone gotten hibernation working? I'm getting the impression that it's either the graphics driver (I haven't found one that works on this thing, so I'll echo Stesie's request for elaboration) or ACPI drivers (god help me on that, since Toshiba only supplies Vista drivers, and those don't seem to be usable).
Geez, I haven't even *used* Vista and I'm already hating it. (Working on this machine for a friend.)
