Problem getting files off of crashed main drive. Its now on another computer

I have a drive from one computer and there are issues with the drive. It is a friend of mine and he installed SP2 and it crashed and is running in a loop. I can't get into safe mode so I have attached it to another computer. I have decided that I am going to wipe it and start over but I need to get the files out of MyDocuments and Desktop from one of the profiles. ON My OWN computer I can access it as a secondary drive and see the files and I can see it through the DOS prompt. MY PROBLEM is that I am trying to get the files but the profile was password protected and when I try and open those folders it says access denied. It says it both in MYCOMPUTER on my own computer and also in DOS mode. Hopefully that is clear. Please help my friend is computerless and I want to help him out. He works from home and is crippled. (sob story over haha)

I meant his ability to work was crippled not that he was physically handicapped. I reread that and it sounded insensitive.

I SOLVED IT, I got a solution from another forum

I would first try to claim ownership of the folder structure through the NTFS permisisons.
