Getting rid of partial installs of XP Professional at startup

Here's the problem...

Due to massive system problems, attempted to upgrade PC from XP Home to XP Professional.

Upgrade didn't work.

Attempted to do full install of XP Pro on another drive in machine - first time wasn't successful, but was able to do full install on second try.

The only problem I'm having is that on startup, I have to choose between 3 installations. If the first 2 are chosen, it attempts to continue the failed upgrade/installation. The 3rd listing is the correct one and works perfectly.

How do I get rid of these failed installations?

you need to remove the entries for these installations in the boot.ini file. but be careful, and back up the boot.ini before you delete anything. right click My Computer. Click properties>Advanced tab>settings button under Start up and Recovery. Then hit the button next to edit manually. now you need to figure out which entry is the one that you need to keep, and delete the others. You will be deleting the long entries in the bottom half of the file that look like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Home or Professional Edition" /fastdetect

they should be in the same order as you see them on the boot screen. so if you always highlight the first one, keep the first one, delete the other 2, etc...
