Security Certificate Error - Insurmountable?

I just recently upgraded my IE browser from 6 to 7. Now, it seems that 90% plus of the sites I visit, which never generated the error in IE 6, are blipping me and saying

"To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has blocked this website from displaying content with security certificate errors. Click here for options..."

I'm running XP Pro with SP2 on a pretty stable machine (store-bought at Micro Center, their own brand, PowerSpec, that has worked well for about 4 years now), with AVG ANti-Virus and a minimum of very simple programs that run in the background (File-ex, Personal Reminder, etc).

Did a Google search and found the usual "Open Tools, Internet, Security, Custom Level, etc" instructions and tried to follow the instructions, even to the point of allowing EVERYTHING [I know, bad and stupid, right?] to stop the dreaded message from constantly popping up. But when I hit the final button to apply or say ok, the boxes and the rest of the screen turn white, the hourglass appears, and ultimately, I have to shut down so I can reboot and use the computer---with the "security certificate error" notice still appearing in the browser when I use it.

So I'm posting this in a semi-desperate attempt for a solution from someone who really knows how to kill that notice without killing my computer. From what I'm seeing, I'm only one of many with this problem.

Thanks for your time and attention.

I've never seen this, even though I just moved to IE7.
The problem is possibly Google's tracking system:

Try blocking this url via your firewall. See how you go:
