Unhappy Drag & Drop stops file access

I am using XPHome SR1 and recently started experiencing a peculiar problem.

If I drag and drop to copy or move a file or folder from one location to another on my HD the file or folder can no longer be opened or deleted. I I try to open the file in an pplication, I get the following message: "Could not opth the file. File is locked." Trying tro open a folder in exploere results in: "... is not aceessible. Access is denied."

Attempting to deleting a file or folder results in: "Cannot delete... access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use."

The file is not in use, and rebooting does not solve the problem. I can access any other file in teh same folder that was no dragged and dropped.

If I use another method to move or copy the file or folder (cut and paste, copy and paste, send to a folder) there is no problem. If I copy these files to my laptop running Win98, the same inaccessible files on the WinXP machine a accessible on the Win98 machine.

I have run 2 different virus checkers that report no viruses.

Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem. Although your post is 1 1/2 years old I thought I'd try and reply. I'm running Windws XP Professional SR1. The problem happens only when I drag and drop large files (1.7GByte) and not small files (300MByte). I don't know if it happens only with .mpg files or others. After moving a file by drag and drop I can't delete the file to the recycle bin or copy it to any other folder. However I can delete such a file while holding the shift key which deletes the file directly without sending it to the recycle bin. The disk I have it on is an NTFS disk but I can't copy such a file to a FAT32 disk.

Have you found any solution.

drag and drop- access denied

I am having the same problem on a partition of my hard drive. Just lost access to a bunch of photos by dragging and dropping. Anyone figure out how to fix the problem.... and get photos/files access back. I already have service pack 2.

I subsequently discovered that SP2 did not in fact remove the problem. But the "Access denied" lasts only till the next re-boot.
