Problem viewing java with IE

A friend of mine has a fairly new computer, about 5 months old.. About a month ago, he started experiencing problems viewing java applications in Internet Explorer. It works in the MSN browser, just not in IE. He has (I assume) XP home and (I assume) IE 6. Is there a way to fix this? It really stumped me.
