I was just looking through old posts here and there are 3 pages on " windows update" problems. Language, proper date and time, clearing IE history and temp. files, are some possible cures. I have had a similiar problem - download part is fine but the install hangs. I think its mostly the site giving trouble.

A couple of weeks ago I first heard of someone being told to delete something called a "Catroot" file to fix this problem. I'd never heard of it but was told that the advice is coming from Microsoft. I ignored it until I saw this post in another forum.

Here's part:

"Well, I take back a couple of the nasty things I have said about MS, Prompt reply and problem solved. I'll just paste MS reply for the problem here less my case ID etc. I have done as instructed and it worked without a hitch.

"From your inquiry, I understand that after you download Windows Updates, you couldn’t install them. We shall be working to resolve this specific issue through the course of the case. If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

Based on my research, please perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Closed all open programs, including McAfee or other Anti-virus program.

2. Deleted C:\Windows\System32\CATROOT2 folder.

3. Repeated the attempt to install Windows Updates.

4. Check the problem.

If you have any more questions about this particular issue, don't hesitate to contact me. At this time I suppose you have no further questions and I will close this issue. If you have any questions about the specific issue, please reply this email. I will follow up as soon as possible."

Hope this works as well for all as it worked for me. I was abit queasy about deleting the folder so I made a copy of it just in case needed but as stated it worked perfectly,,,, No reformat needed.. Praise be to Bill and tech support."

TTTiger20, please tell us if this worked for you.
_______________

I had never personally tried this idea, but today I got a recommended update from the Update site that would download but not install. I decided to eat my own dog food and try deleting the C:\Windows\System32\Catroot2 folder. It worked.

This is such a common complaint that I'd be interested in knowing if others have tried it, and whether it was successful for them. If anyone else has tried it, please respond.

Thank you

Thumbs up Windows Updates Failure

The deletion of the CATROOT2 folder solved my problem. DELL had me use the installation XP disk in a repair mode which did not solve the problem. This folder came back by itself following a few updates and restart. I'm current now.

Thanks for the solution.

I should have added that to my post. Windows will recreate a fresh Catroot2 folder if you delete, move or rename the damaged one.

Hello .......
Very interesting ,as I had the same problem in the past ,
1 Question please ..
Do I delete CATROOT 2/FOLDER ,or to I open that folder delete the contents 1 by 1 and then delete the empty folder .
Would that be the proper way of doing ,or does it not matter .
Come to think of it with any folders .delete the contents first ,then folder , if the Item is not in Add/Remove.Thanks for the answer .

Most people are understandably cautious about deleting something from their computer without knowing what's going to happen. So it's more common to first re-name the folder (change catroot2 to rootcat2) or move the folder. Deleting the folder moves it to the recycle bin. After you've gained some confidence that you haven't damaged your computer and seeing that Windows has recreated a fresh folder, you can get rid of the folder (delete or empty recycle bin).

Deleting the folder deletes the files within the folder.

Keep in mind I'm referring to the Catroot2 folder. Files on floppy disks, network drives and other removable media are deleted permanently on the spot (they don't use the recycle bin at all) and they cannot be undeleted.

Lightbulb If the above doesn't work...

If the above doesn't work (as it did not for me)
Do this:
-Go to Start > Run
-Type "cmd" and press enter
-At the command prompt type the following in order:
1) regsvr32 wuapi.dll
2) regsvr32 wuweb.dll
3) regsvr32 wucltui.dll
4) regsvr32 wuavengl.dll
5) regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
6) regsvr32 wups.dll
7) net stop bits
8) net stop wuauserv
9) net stop cryptsvc
10) ren c:/windows/SoftwareDistribution sd1
11) ren c:/windows/system32/CatRoot2 cr2
12) net start bits
13) net start cryptsvc
14) net start wuauserv

Now go back to Start > Run and type "services.msc"

Under "Alerter"
-Set Startup Type to "Automatic"
-Click Start

Under "Indexing Service"
-Set Startup Type to "Automatic"
-Click Start

Under "Under HTTP SSL"
-Set Startup Type to "Automatic"
-Click Start

Under "Performance Logs"
-Set Startup Type to "Automatic"
-Click Start

Go back to Start > Run and type "msconfig"
-Disable all items under "Startup"
-Under "Services" click "Hide Microsoft Services" checkbox and disable all listed services.
-Click "Apply" and "Ok"

Restart your computer and try Windows Update again. Do not cancel in the middle of searching for updates. This may take up to 20 minutes.

Good luck.

hi all

Ok I've been dealing with the same issue as the rest. but this problem is new to me, I had at one time been able to do all updates, even upgrade media player and ie7. but as with the rest I'm unable to get installer to work. I did everything as said before, I tried to delete catroot2 , didn't work, then i tried
-Go to Start > Run
-Type "cmd" and press enter
-At the command prompt type the following in order:
1) regsvr32 wuapi.dll
2) regsvr32 wuweb.dll
3) regsvr32 wucltui.dll
4) regsvr32 wuavengl.dll
5) regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
6) regsvr32 wups.dll
7) net stop bits
8) net stop wuauserv
9) net stop cryptsvc
10) ren c:/windows/SoftwareDistribution sd1
11) ren c:/windows/system32/CatRoot2 cr2
12) net start bits
13) net start cryptsvc
14) net start wuauserv

Now go back to Start > Run and type "services.msc"

Under "Alerter"
-Set Startup Type to "Automatic"
-Click Start

Under "Indexing Service"
-Set Startup Type to "Automatic"
-Click Start

Under "Under HTTP SSL"

-Click Start

Go back to Start > Run and type "msconfig"
-Disable all items under "Startup"
-Under "Services" click "Hide Microsoft Services" checkbox and disable all listed services.
-Click "Apply" and "Ok"

when I got to these 2 items
10) ren c:/windows/SoftwareDistribution sd1
11) ren c:/windows/system32/CatRoot2 cr2
it said that it had the wrong syntax or something or other I even tried to copy past. didn't work !
Im about to toss this pc and my money out of the window. Could you please help a lost soul!!!!!
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me>
Ice

There was a error in the instructions. Substitute a backslash for the forward slash, and you will be good to go.

Nevertheless, I did all this, and my problem was not solved. The instructions so astutely provided by the earlier poster helped my computer to force the download of many updates, but they still did not "install." I don't have an answer for this obstruction, which is unprecedented in my experience.
