My problem is, my sound no longer works, and the program "SoundMAX" has disappeared, yet I don't know where to get it from.

Error message from Windows Media Player when attempting to play music:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

Alongside this issue, I was wondering about doing a complete system restore, but I do not know how to do one.

Thankyou for your help in advanced.

your audio driver is here at Asus http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us

soundmax can be picky to install, you may need to use the If No Setup File method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

This is how to do a Clean Install of XP if you have a full copy disc of XP

Thank You.
I'm so happy now I have sound.
Seriously.
Cheers.

Though I still have 1 question.
I never got a disc with my computer.
So.. That's going to be a problem isn't it?

Not really, as you have an Asus named board, all the drivers you need are there, the other you will need will be the Nvidia 7800GT display driver and that is here http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.21_whql.html

download the drivers, unzip and save to disc, a DVD disc if possible, they have larger capacity for storage, or make a note of where to go after the Clean Install.
