DVD/CD drive cannot read CDs

I went from Vista Home to a clean install of XP PRO and am now at XP PRO SP2. My DVD/CD drive D cannot read any CD, either audio or software CD such as Nero or Office. The drive just ramps up sound like it is going to read the CD, but then dies out. This is on a Compaq Presario SR2150NX PC and the drive is designated as ATAPI DVD A DH16AYH in Device Manager. The drive was working during the install of XP obviously, just to give a sense of when the problem started. Any idea what I can do to get this drive working ?

Thanks,
DC4580

If the drive will no longer boot from a CD, blow into the open tray. If it still fails It's possible the CD laser is worn.

I rebooted XP into safe mode and the drive works as it should. I am thinking that there is something activating in full windows blocking the proper use of the drive. Any suggestions ?

Thanks disk...
The deletes of the upper and lower limits were done, so I am now looking at startup software which could be blocking my use of the drive.

Virtual drive software? I know that sometimes my pendrive stopped working if it was a particular letter.

Not that I am aware of. What would I be looking for if I were looking for virtual drive references or setup ? I appreciate your patience with my questions. The cd-rom drive is drive D.

Nero, ultraISO, Alcohol120, stuff like that.
In device manager there may be a reference in the "SCSI and RAID controllers".

No Roxio, Nero, Alcohol120. I did find something which was under Non-Plug and Play Drivers, parpart and serial both have exclamation points. I will have to look around for anything to do with those entries.

No issues exist according to Microsoft with these two hidden entries.

Any odd storage devices in there. SPTD.sys?
Ever used daemon tools?

No daemon tools or any references to daemon. No SPTD.SYS.

One file I did find was ULTRA.SYS in c:\windows\driver cache\i386\driver.cab

Is there anything I can do with this ?

DVD/CD drive cannot read CDs - solved

I was on with HP tech in chat and she was close, but on wrong device. Here is the procedure that corrected my problem:

_____________________________________________

Goto Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager.

Click on View, choose devices by connection.

Expand the ATI IDE Controller
Expand the Primary IDE Channel
Make sure ATAPI DVD A DH16AYH is listed under the expanded IDE Controller.

Double Click the Primary IDE Channel
Click on Advanced Settings Tab
Change the transfer mode for Device 0 from "DMA if available" to "PIO only"
Click OK

____________________________________________

I am back to normal use of the Cd drive now. Thanks for any assistance, tips, knowledge, etc. rendered. Much appreciated !
