no internet connection
I have windows xp media edition and recently uninstalled AOL in favour of sky.com. I also have mcafee installed. In order to connect to the net I have to open one of the ports. But, as soon as I restart my computer the connection somehow gets turned off and will not connect until I reinstall mcafee and open the port again. This seems bizarre!! Can anyone help? I'm no computer buff so in easy speak please.
Thanks

Browser uses standard port 80 You shouldn't need to open any port. Which one are you opening BTW?
Something must be wrong with your installation of macca, or something else might be hogging the port, maybe blocking it.
Are you sure you don't have your browser blocked?
Will macca allow you to re-run the configuration wizard?

Yes I have to open port 80. But this only works when I reinstall mcafee. When I shut down and restart, port 80 is still ticked as being open but internet exporer still can't open the web page so I have to go through the whole install thing again just to get it to work. I've tried uninstalling macafee and opening the port with windows firewall but that doesn't work either. I don't understand it at all!

The fact port 80 is closed may be a configuration error or something else, but truthfully, I would seek an alternative to Mcaffe.

Thanks, believe me I'd love to use something else but I can't figure out how to get the internet connected with out it. I've tried opening port 80 with other things but nothing else seems to work. Both the techies at sky and mcafee can't seem to help me either. I' m really stuck as I'm trying to avoid reinstalling windows as a few people have suggested.

Windows firewall is disabled? It should be.
You can connect with nothing at all. You don't need anything else to use the net.
What if you switch macca to a setting that bypasses it?

Yes. windows firewall is disabled. What sort of setting in Macca to by pass what - do you mean windows firewall? My computer won't connect to the net at all when macca has been uninstalled. Even if I open port 80 in windows it still won't connect. I've worked out I can connect when I reinstall macca then open port 80. Every time I shut down my computer, it seems to block the port again somehow when I want to use it again. Don't know if it's macca causing the problem or windows! But I'm getting fed up of uninstalling mcafee then installing again whenever I need to use the net.

I mean a setting in macca to allow itself to be bypassed or disabled.
What you could try first, is this:

Tried the link and downloaded. Heard a few beeps when the repair box came on, but when it restarted internet exp still couldn't find the page although it seemed to repair a couple of thiings. I've taken off macca completely now so can't go into it's settings. I've put on Avg but no internet still. Have to use internet at work. Thanks anyway. Got anything else I could try?

I looked up my winsock files and it seems that there are lots missing so I think this is where the problem lies. I have decided back up everything and do a factory reset. Thanks for the help. I probably wouldn't have come to this decision if I hadn't seen your last thread
