Sound problem, but not speakers.

A while back my sound worked, but later on my sound stopped completely. When I play music it would cut out and become distorted, eventually no sound at all.

I looked at Device Manager and there are no yellow question marks.

I followed another person's instructions going to device manager and right clicking sound devices and removing them, then rebooting. It sounded perfect at first but then got completely distorted like last time, then some static noise, and finally it overtakes the sound.

I am using Altec lansing computer speakers if that helps.

Any help would be appreciated.

What if you unplug the cable to the computer but leave the speakers on?

What model do you have, if not sure Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

on some models there are downloads for the speakers
