Network Connections folder empty
I have been trying to view my network connections to be able to edit a setting for my internal wireless card. When I go to network connections, there is nothing there. I create new connections and they just don't show up. When I click View-Refresh, I get the message "The network connections folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network adapters on your machine. Please makde sure that the Network Connections service is enabled and running.", but it is running. I've disable and enabled again, rebooted, etc. but nothing. When I go to System-Device Manager, I see the 4 different things I have under Network Adapters - from 1394 to my wireless card. If I could modify settings here that would be great, but you can only view the settings. I have no network icon in my system tray to edit anything.
I'm at a complete loss. I've downloaded all of the latest windows updates, uninstalled the wireless card, installed new network cards, etc. - thinking this may knock something in place.
Any ideas?
p.s. Running Windows XP Prof, SP1. I'm using Windows Update to make sure I have the latest info. Norton Antivirus- which I have disabled.

You need to post your full hardware spec,

doesn't mean anything without a make and model.

I thought I had enough info in my original post. I edited it right after to add a couple of things. Regardless, I hope this is enough:
Windows XP, SP1. Windows version 5.1, physical memory 512KB. Intel 1700 MHZ, P4.
IBM Thnkpad A31P.
4 Network Adapter showing up in System-Device Manager:
1394 Net Adapter
Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver
IBM High Rate Wireless LAN NiniPCI Combo Card
Interl PRO/100 VE Network Connection
Thanks for your help!

Did not work
Going to network 'My network places' is the same place that Control Panel - Network connections takes you. I still don't see anything in the window. Sorry, but thanks.

madtek,,, I would suggest you to remove all the network card driver, I mean all of it from Device manager (even the hidden ones). it seem to me that network protocols are messedup, not the network card(s) itself,,, by removing and reinstalling the card you will re-assgning the protocol to the NIC.
cheers

Been there, done that
I have already tried removing all cards, then rebooting and getting them all back again, but nothing. I've even tried a System Restore in XP and that isn't doing anything either. IBM is coming today to install a new system board and wireless card. I've had nothing but problems with this laptop. I think I'm going to have to reinstall the OS. We'll see.

I got the answer
The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network Adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the Network Connections service is enabled and running.
Hey I have the same problem but still havent completely got the
solution. Try this site : http://www.experts-exchange.com/Netw..._20638739.html
You must have service pack one installed and done a system restore, or you have installed service pack one and upgraded from xp home to professional.
If you get yours working then please tell me how you did it?
I will now try and search for an answer @ microsoft using the Q_20638739 error which caused bith our problems....
By the way all ppl above are no help and a good thing you can always try is type your error message (The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network Adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the Network Connections service is enabled and running.) into google and search for pages of advice.

Hey there,
I'm also experiencing the problem above. Maybe my situation will offer some insight.
I'm running WinXP, SP3, on a 3.06 ghz P4. The Windows install is about 3 days off of a fresh install/reformat.
The problem occurred immediately after a reboot from a Back|track Live CD session. Also, plugged in was a new USB Wireless Adaptor (Linksys WUSB54Gv2.) I'm guessing both of the above contributed to my dilemma. Any new suggestions would be appreciated.

Fix
Start, Run. cmd.exe
regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dll
Hitting enter after each one. That should do it.
The dynamic libraries are hashed, likely due to some "Free" spyware search or crap program.
Enjoy!

Network Connections Folder Empty
Thanx for the hints to try;
Start, Run. cmd.exe
regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dll
Hitting enter after each one. That should do it.
However I did this and was successful with the first 2 on the list in fix #12. The third, regsvr32 netman.dll came back with the following;
“netman.dll” is not an executable file and no registration helper is registered for this file type.
and after a restart the network connections are still missing and we don't seem closer to a resolution.
is there any other things i might try?
Thanx

I am having the same problem. I have had this issue on one of my other computers six months ago and making my computer to stop thinking it had a wireless network connection(which it doesnt) helped. I do not remember how to do this though.
