Angry Sound and Audio Devices

I upgraded to the Windows Media Player 9.0 and started getting an error message when attempting to listen to music of the web of: no sound device found. I found it strange because with WinAmp, I'm able to listen to my mp3's and midi files, so I know my speakers and sound card are working just fine.

I went to the Microsoft XP site and they recommended and the knowledge database recommended troubleshooting my sound files.

PROBLEM: The instructions say to click on "Advance" in the Volume Tab but it's greyed out.

Here are my settings:

1st Tab - VOLUME: No Audio Device (everything else is grayed out)

2nd Tab - SOUNDS: Sound Scheme is set to "Windows Default" (everything else is grayed out)

3rd Tab - AUDIO: Under "Sound Playback" and "Sound Recording" the Default Device for both is this: Model #0 Line Playback. Clicking the drop down arrow on both does NOT give any options except the same one. Where is says "MIDI Music Playback" - it's grayed out but the default is set to: No MIDI playback devices. There's a checkmark where it says: "Use only default devices" -- although if I take the checkmark away, it doesn't change a single thing.

4th Tab - HARDWARE:It has 7 devices listed and for each one it says they are working properly.

I am sooooooooooooo frustrated with this. I'm hoping you or someone can guide me. I think that "Model #0 Line Playback" may be the problem, but how do I change that?

Can someone please, please help me? Thanks

Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Component Services/Services. Make sure audio is enabled. Mine was somehow previously disabled so I when I changed that, EVERYTHING worked just fine.

Let me know if it works for you. Happy Holidays.

Very easy solution

Go http://support.dell.com/support/down...=us&l=en&s=gen put in the required info choose correct OS and proceed first download the chipset driver, no need for restart yet, then install the audio driver then reboot and it should work just like majik

Smile Starting up "Windows Audio"

I had this same problem on Windows XP Professional suddenly occur - speakers stopped working, RealPlayer giving the message, "Cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it", iTunes player simply not playing.

Went to "Component Services" as suggested and found "Windows Audio" (after looking for "Audio") which was stopped. Clicked "start the service" and everything worked fine.

Thanks for posting the solution! I would never have found it otherwise.

Hope this post helps somebody else.

Funny, A three year old thread save me from smashing my computer.

A Google search led me to this thread, which solved my sound problem. Rather than reloading my drivers (three times) cracking my box to re-seat my sound card, etc... a simple Google search was all I needed.

Thanks for the tips guys - it was spot on to solve a really annoying little problem. I'm not sure if it was caused by a media player upgrade or it alos coincided with my son starting on Itunes. Hopefully it's now fixed for good.

Hello, if I may intrude? I have a related problem and saw here the many high caliber members so I felt maybe there's hope for me too?

A small, vertical rectangle about 2" x 1", greenish/greysh color, appears in the middle of my screen so that it's next to impossible to work, it doesn't move when I scroll the screen up and down so it's always in there and no X to get rid of. It only says on top: "Volume", on bottom: "Mute" with a space to put a check mark, and in the middle there's a sliding mark to go up or down . I went to properties, and many other places but nothing refers to this thing. Somewhere in Properties I saw many of these all lined up and all blank(?). I also went to "Sound & audio" - nothing. I tried google too nothing either. I even went to the places mentioned in this forum but didn't even see the word "Audio"...

Being this thing is so weird I wonder if anyone ever came across it??? Thanks ever SO much for any ideas on how to get rid of this little thing but big nightmare! :-) Adela

Hey guys,

I just signed up because I have been having problems with my audio, and after three days of ripping my hair out, downloading drivers, rolling back drivers, setting up restore point, and finally came across this thread...thank the lord, and thank you guys! My audio problem is now gone, however...

During my escipade to fix the audio, somehow my system configuration was messed up. So when i tried to open Adobe Premiew Pro 1.5, it says "your system configuration seems to have changed since the time this product was activated, but when i try to reactivate it, it doesn't work. It says maybe because the activation number limit has been exceeded.

Any ideas guys??

Thanks
