bad hard drive
i am recieving a warning message whenever i start my computer that my hard drive is about to fail.so i brought a new hard drive to replace the old one before it finally fails.my problem is,i have alot of important files and programs that i really want to keep intact from my old drive.how do i go about placing all of the programs, settings, and functionality of my old failing drive to my new one?i've tried cloning the old drive to my new one,and the new drive works fine as a replacement to my old drive as long as the two drives are connected to my computer at the same time, but whenever i disconnect the old drive and run only the new drive very few of my programs or setting will work,i get error messages everywhere,i.e,the program cant find its files to run,or that it needs to be reinstalled.a good many of my programs i cant reinstalled because i no longer have the setups for them.but the clone of my new drive is identical to the old drive in everyway but will not run like my old drive .can anyone help please?it will be greatly appreiated

i've used norton ghost, partiton magic, and even western digitals data lifeguard tool that came with the new hard drive, like i said the cloned drive will work fine as a repacement to the old drive as long as the stay connected to my computer at the same time, its when i try to run the new HDD alone i cant get my programs to work,i am typing this message now because the two drives are both connected, but i have booted from the new HDD to do this,so the cloned (new) drive somehow can work, but why wont it work alone?BTW the new drive is a western digital 60 GB 7200 rpm and the old drive is a maxtor 40 GB 5400 rpm

Strange....
Is the only thing to change the HDD? Can you not boot without the old one connected?
Does the new drive have the same ID as the old (C:\ for example).
Ghost is a classic imaging tool I would recommend it 100% to anyone.

when the two drives are connected the old drive is C . and the new drive is D . when the new drive is alone it becomes C. and the new drive will boot when it is alone, but it wont keep the same settings that allow the old drive to run its programs, such as norton ghost etc.

Max is probably correct you may have your new drive set as slave and your old one is set as master you are best checking the back of the drives were the pin is and see if it needs moving along to master.
infact your new drive will be set as slave i imagine because i am sure 2 drives cannot run when both are set to master i may be wrong though.

So the old one is slave and the new master and when both are connected you have the slave as C:\ and master as D:\.....

That has to be wrong... If drive 0 is set to master and has one partition and drive 1 is set to slave and has one partition then they should be C:\ and D:\ - not D:\ C:\.......
You mentioned cable select - forget that and use master / slave for IDE...
Are both HDD on IDE 0?

IDE 0 is the first of your 2 IDE ports. These enable a total of 4 IDE devices (HDDs of CD ROMs).
So are both HDD on the same cable?
BUT I would suggest ensuring that you new drive has jumper settings to Master and try a boot with only that drive attached to your first IDE port.......
You must be really fed up by now.... Stick with it!!
