Deleted Sound

My teenager deleted the sound on my emachine. I get "no active mixer devices available", yet when I run the help diagnostic it says there is no problem with the sound. I have realtek high definition audio driver, version 1.96.

I read further in the posts and downloaded Acer since I have Realtek AC'97 audio, the same as another person who posted, and after I downloaded it it said the result- failure. Now what the heck do I do?? I didn't follow the directions in the posted message, since in my program manager I didn't have realtek listed in the sound devices. I just downloaded and installed.
Any suggestions? Please?

Use a system restore to a point before you did what you did.

It happened quite a while ago and I didn't think it could be repaired, until one of my son's friends told me it probably could. Now I don't have a restore point for it because its been too long since it was deleted. That's when I started on this quest to get my sound back, and I've been three days working on it.
Is there anything else I can do??
