Ethernet card

Hey guys, how's it going?

Here is the problem. I have a Dell XPS Gen 4 running XP Professional thats about 4 years old. I reformatted it last week and everything runs great except that the internet won't work. It says I am connected at 400 Mbps although it doesn't recieve or send any packets. Before the reformat it was a thousand. I tried setting up a network, but after I complete all the steps it says 'You are now finished' and doesn't change anything. The only 2 connections available are 1394 connections 1 and 2. There is no Local Area Network or any other type of connection. I have a Terayon modem and a Linksys router.

I've been trying to research this for a week now. I found it could be the NIC not registering, but I took the computer apart and looked at the PCI slots and to my understanding, it looks like I don't have a NIC. Is that possible? When I look at the Device Manager, the 2 Network Adapters are the 2 1394 connections. In 'Other devices' however, there is a PCI Input Device and a Ethernet Conroller. I try to install either one, but they both fail to find the software for it. They have no specific names so I don't know where to look for what drivers.

When I try to repair either 1394 Connection it says "Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the onnections. Cannot proceed. When I type ipconfig in the command box, it says 'Windows IP Configuration' than goes back to the cursor. There is no QoS packet option in the 1394 connections either.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this and/or all the help! If you need to know any other info, just let me know.

According to the Dell website, your PC comes with an intergrated Network card. So it won't be a PCi card.
On the back of your PC where you plug in a network card, does it light up when a cable is plugged in to it?

What is the exact model of PC? IF you look on the back of your tower you should see a "Service Tag" or on the top with the same name.

Go on to Dell.com and search for drivers and support to download any drivers.

Hello Kevin and thank you. Okay I found out I have a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gig Controller. I downloaded and updated all the drivers and Local Area Connection now pops up in my Network Connections. The problem now is that it keeps saying "Network cable unplugged" and will not connect to it. I've restarted the computer, unplugged the modems for a couple of minutes, and disabled/enabled all 3 types of connections. Both the 1394 connections should be disabled and only have the Local Area Connection enabled at the end right? Do the firewalls have to be turned completely off?

Also, when I now type ipconfig in the Command Prompt, it says "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Media State . . . . . . . : Media disconnected"

No, this could be a number of problems now:

1) It could be your cable modem / router.
2) It could be your cable to the router / modem
3) It could be your Network card

If I was you, swap test your cable with another if possible. Also when you plug in your cable (Look on the back where the LAN cable goes, does it light up green) ?
