Cannot read DVD/CD rom drive & error loading O/S verifying DMI Pool data

my dvd-rom will not read dvds/cd-roms but the light seems to flicker and when i open "my computer" it seems to be frozen until i eject to ehich the pc returns to normal.
so i went and restarted the pc and now it says verifying DMI Pool data..error loading operating system...

I checked the bios settings and its set to boot up with harddisk first....but after saving and exiting nothing seems to happen it gives the same message..
