Unhappy Fast User Switching Does not work

The option for Fast User Switching does not stay checked. When I go to the Manage Users screen and check the box that say Fast User Switching then click apply it does not work. If I do anything else and then go back to that screen the box is un-checked. Can anyone help me!!

Fast User Switching won't work in every situation.

- The Welcome screen must be enabled.
- The computer must not be joined to a domain.
- Offline files must be disabled.

Thank you for answering me so quickly. I currently have 384 MB of RAM on my computer. Where do I go to check the SYSTEM / VIDEO RAM sharing value. I would think that I have enough memory. I also have OFFLINE FILES disabled, I am not a memeber of a domain, and the WELCOME SCREEN is enabled. Do you have any other suggestions.

Click the link and the new page will tell you about Fast Switching & Memory.

I would advise you to download Belarc Advisor

This will give you a full system spec report and you will be able to see if your graphic card shares system memory.

Also

Right Click an empty area of your desktop > Properties > Settings > Adapter

This will tell you your adaptor type and memory.

I downloaded Belarc Advisor and the report did not show me sharing system memory. Also I went to the adapter screen and it said I am using 64 mb for my graphics card. It must be something else that is preventing me from using Switch User. Thanks for your help.

You also need a minimum of 120 MB of System Memory FREE to enable Fast User Switching.

I have 384 mb physical memory and 1476 mb total windows memory. Currently I am only using 168 mb of memory with 1308 mb free. The only thing I can think of is that some program that I have loaded is causing me not to be able to switch users.

If that is the case it will be trial and error I'm afraid.

I am logged on as an Administrator.

I have looked at the help & support centre on the subject of fast user switching and it did not help me. It tells you to go to the user accounts screen and click on the box for Fast User Switching, which I have done except that it does not stay clicked.

I also tried the Microsoft Knowledge Base on the subject "fast user switching dosen't work" and did not come up with any good stuff.

Something must be running that clears that flag because if I check the box on the User Accounts screen, the click apply, and then immediately try to switch users it will work. However, if I go do something else after selecting "Fast User Switching" somehow the box gets unchecked. There must be some policy or service that is doing this, if I can only find it.

well i'me stumped then, this may sound drastic but wiuld a windows re-install cure it
What have you got runnig

search www.altavista.com for
Fast User Switching troubleshooting

go to control panel, admin tools & services
Locate terminal services & check to see if its on manual
Locate fast user switching & check to see if enabled

Did you apply changes before closing the user acounts screen
Have you tried e-mail microsoft directly

I am very stumped also. I just got done doing a total re-install of XP; however, I re-loaded quite a bit of software at one time. Therefore, I don't know if any of those are causing the problem. If I do another re-install I will have to load stuff one at a time and see if this problem occurs again. Then I will know who the culprit is.

I tried searching Alta Vista and did not find anything that helped.

I also tried to email Microsoft directly; however, they said that I had used up my free requests for help and that I needed to pay per incident now or post my question on a forum. I can't believe that you pay for Windows XP and get only a couple of free help questions.

It looks like doing a re-install is going to be my best bet.
