Unhappy Losing connection to server

Using Xp pro Sp1 pc's to connect to a windows 2000 sp3 server, I am getting regular messages on some pc's saying "You are working offline on 'server1' and may continue working normally. Changes to any files will be copied back to 'server1' when you synchronise"
Why should I lose my connection apparently at random? If I ping the server I get a reply. If I look in Network Places, the server is there, but no folders within it are visible. A few minutes later everything is back in place. Any ideas?
