Cntrl-Alt-del

Hello all,

I was wondering if some-one could please tell me that when I go into Cntrl-Alt-Del and then go to Processes, what I can shut down and what I can't for when I want to do some gaming, I only ask as I knew with Win98 that you could shut down everything except Explorer and Systray, I seem to have quite alot listed and only know of 2 I can shutdown.

Any help would be greatly received

Many thanks in advance

Falcon

Perhaps you shoud go here first and stop processes that you don't need. Start>control panel >performance and maintenance>Administrative tools> services. Double click on services that you want stopped.

Then go Start>run and type"msconfig" without the quotes. Click on startup tab and uncheck what you don't need running in your system tray. Your system will now boot faster and won't waste cycles on stuff that you don't need.

HTH

Hello augie2,

Thank you, one thing though, I thought that some-one said somewhere that you should'nt use MSconfig, I might be wrong, but could have sworn I read that somewhere.

Thing is in the Cntrl-Alt-Del, things listed in there don't mean anything to me, I just don't understand them plain and simple lol

Things like svchost or whatever its called lol

I'll do your suggestion though

Thanks

Msconfig is for starting 3rd party apps. Don't go crazy in there tho, make sure you know what's what. You may disable your firewall or AV this way. If you stop the wrong svchost you could crash yor system. Have a read here for a primer.

I speak the truth here when I say that due to bad health mentally I find it hard to take things in and understand what I'm reading, this does'nt help by the fact that I do not have my XP disk as it exploded in my CD-Rom drive not long ago! lol

So I am very cautious about doing things like this, I have been to that black vipers site, but to be honest it is all double dutch to me, I am just trying to stop to much from running as when I play games I don't want to much going on for the Processor lol

I know only two things to shutdown and that's my firewall and my virus scanner, all other processes I do not have a clue about.

I appreciate your help

OK, then first things first, get a new disk ASAP from MS. You never know when you'll need it. Even without fooling around these tweaks, your system can get screwed all by itself, though XP is very well behaved. You can stop anything in the tray without fear.

Have fun

Oh I see, ok then so I can shutdown all processes, even explorer?

I have at the moment something like 13 processes running, only two of them are quite large like 14,246k and the other one something close to that, I think they are the svchost ones.

Thing is with my XP disk that I had to take the broken disk back to the chap who built my PC and he has had to send it back to his suppliers and they then return it to Microsoft I presume, and they need to test it! I can't see why they need to test a broken disk, then again I am no expert in such matters! lol

My chap who I go to for things said he keeps ringing each day to remind them about my situation, but as yet nothing! typical eh? lol
