shut down for handicaped person

Hi all my brother suffered a stroke 30 years ago while in the army. I am trying to teach him how to shut down his computer properly but his retention is not good. He has a new desktop computer with WinXP Pro

I have tried the quick shutdown icon on the desktop but it gets lost in all the folders he creates when he right clicks while he thinks he is creating something.

What I would like to know is some registry hacks. (I have Acronis true image for if I mess up) I would like to delete the "Log off" button that he sees when he clicks the start button and also the "Stand by" and "Reset" buttons for a start also if possible delete the "Turn Off" button and make the "turn off computer" button shut down the computer, but that might be a big ask.

Thanks in advance for any help I just want to keep it simple for him.

Hi, I have not tested this option ( I will if you like) but this removes the log off button. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...enu_logoff.htm
Create a system restore before downloading.

Thanks Monty007 I have saved it on my USB stick.
I neglected to say that my brother does not have internet access because he is not able to use it. I will still keep looking for registry hacks and will report back if I find anything. I will try this in the next couple of days. Thanks again if I was home I would test it out on my test rig, I live 650 kilometers away.

Might it help to disable the start button altogether and perhaps attach a shutdown script to a desktop icon?

Sorry for your bro, hope it helps.

Thanks Ant I will probably put a shut down Icon on his desktop the only trouble is I have already tried it on his old computer and some times it gets moved or deleted or usually lost in amongst the many folders and word documents he creates when he right clicks on his desk top.

So far I have a fix from Monty that I hope to try tomorrow to remove the "Log Off" button.

If you can get the windows vista sidebar for xp

http://microsoft.blognewschannel.com...in-windows-xp/

there's a fully customiseable shutdown gadget

it's got great user feedback, might be helpful to you.

Thanks Ant I will have a play with those on my test rig when I get home as I won't be seeing my brother till next trip here.

I would like to report back to Monty that the VB script worked a treat it removed the "Log Off" Thanks very much for that.

I found a registry fix for removing the standby button HERE But no good for me.
Quote:
Remove "Standby" option from shutdown menu.

On a computer with Advanced Power Management there is a Standby option under the Shut Down menu.
If you for some reason want to prevent users from having this option it can be removed with the following Registry hack.

Start the Registry Editor (go to Start, Run and type Regedt32). Find the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\ACPI\Parameters. Click in the right pane and create a new REG_DWORD value. Give it the name Attributes. Set the value to 00000070.
After reboot, Standby is unavailable.

Windows XP.
When I went into the registry I got as far as \ACPI\ but there was no Parameters I also checked on my Sisters computer that I am on now and there is no Parameters. I have found this fix on various forums on the net and I don't know what the difference is, so I will wait till I get home in a few days and will ask then unless anyone here has the answer.

Thanks for your help so far guys.

EDIT:I used regedit not regedit32 that may be the difference I will try it when I get back on my computer in a few days time.
