Unhappy No sound After installing OS

I recently updated my OS to WinXP SP2 from WinXP SP 1. After installing the OS, there's simply no sound in my PC. Volume Control, Sound Properties etc. etc. have all disappeared. I opened the device manager and it showed that the drivers for the Soundmax integrated digital Audio, my sound device, aren't installed. I tried to re-install SoundMax, but re-installation failed and a dialogue box appeared, saying that the drivers for the device aren't installed. And, after updating to SP2, my display adapter also disappeared and I was struck with a display of 640x480 pixel and 4 bit colour for days. I downloaded Intel Extreme Graphics 2 from the intel download center and it provided the remedy for the display problem. I really don't know what's going on.

Hi,
As haveabeer suggest, you could have a manual or driver CD, but if not, then can you reply with the make and model of your PC so then people could help in having your issue sorted.

Well, my PC is a Intel D845GEVB2 with Intel Pentium 4 1.80 GH processor. And just now I downloaded Soundmax and tried to install it. But installation terminated with the old message, "Drivers are not installed. Reboot your system and try again."

If you've done that. Revert back to SP1, or format your PC, once back in to Windows. Update your drivers with SP2 drivers then update to SP2

I don't know how to revert back to SP1 as I don't have the CD. And formatting the PC doesn't mean formatting the hard drives, does it? I recently downloaded the Belarc adviser. In it's report, it says that no multimedia audio controller is installed. Any suggestions?

It may sound stupid, but SP2 can be found in Add / Remove programs, it did on mine, but not sure if MS are still doing this.

The SP2 isn't present in the Add/ Remove programs. And when I run the Add Hardware wizard it detects the Multimedia Audio controller. If I copy the folder drivers which is usually present in the Windows folder from a similar PC and show it as the folder containing drivers in the advaced system of insalling the hardware, will it work?

Hi...

1. Put your M/B CD in your CD drive.
2. Take device manager and select Sound MAX, Right click and select update driver.
3. Select .Install from a specific location(Advanced)
4. Select search removable media(cd-rom)
5. Give next.(It will take the driver for sound automatically)

Before doing this step you should uninstall the driver software.

This board is not listed at Intel Intel D845GEVB2 do you mean the D845GEBV2, http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
if so go to Intel, get the driver, make a note of location of unzipped files and install this way

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start instructions / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a Restore point and follow
