Somebody pleeaase help asap!!

When I start up my pc, Windows XP 3 starts to load but then the pc starts rebooting by itself - continuously. When trying to boot it in Safe Mode I get the error "winlogon.exe application error" - and the rebooting starts again. I can't manage to boot the pc via a Windows install CD, the infamous F8 doesn't work, I simply can't get the pc to boot up in Safe Mode. I strongly suspect a virus being the cause of the mayhem but is unable to do anything unless the computer boots up properly.
Besides the obvious, time is of the essence as a friend of mine's got a load of important stuff on my desktop which we can't retrieve now, and there's less than 24 hours' time left.

I'm seriously holding my fingers crossed for some suggestions coming forth very soon. This is desperateness!

If you can't repair the xp installation in time, you can remove the drive and attach it as a slave to another computer, which should allow you access to the files so you can copy them.
