Freezing at install

My friend had an old computer with linux. He decided to give me the computer, and now i'm trying to install Windows XP SP3 on it. I put the disk in, choose to boot from it, and setup starts. It sits at the blue screen that says Windows Setup while different components load at the bottom. However, it will freeze at two spots. Either randomly at "Kernel Error Fixer DLL" or at "Generic USB Hub Driver". I've left it sitting for long periods of time, and nothing happens. I've attempted the install multiple times and it always freezes at one of those two. One thing i've noticed is that at either one of those, the disk drive will stop making any noise whatsoever. I am running on a burnt Windows XP disk, but it has worked for multiple people (my cousin two weeks ago, in fact) and i dont know what to do. Halp pls?

What is the manufacturer and model number of your computer? If you are running pirated software we can't help you with the XP problem.

It is a Compaq Presario SR2020NX, and i suppose the disk is pirated. It's been proven to be fully functional before, and thats the only reason i haven't called tech support. I dont really like ot be in jail. =X

Sometimes making an exact fresh copy of the install disk you are trying to use
will work where the one you are now trying will not.

You can download BlindWrite with a 20 day free trial---->Here

Did you know for $26.99 you can get the original restore disk ? See below.

A restore disk would be rather useless to me... the system is running 100% Ubuntu, there is no partition with XP still on it. i'm attempting a clean XP install, and i suppose i should just go buy a clean install disk, so if it continues the trouble i can just call microsoft tech support.

hi,looks like you need to format the hard drive but you could try this, it worked for me. if you have a floppy drive and another pc to get on line with.
create thease boot disks (you need 6 formatted floppys) then put floppy 1 in the downed pc then 2 etc. this will get you into the position where you can install xp from youre cd rom .heres were to download the floppys from.
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm its a long way round, but worth a go... good luck.
