Games now crash system under XP
Heya, I wonder if anyone here can help me here.
My games have recently began to crash my system. Sometimes the computer automatically restarts itself, sometimes doing checkdisk, sometimes not. I know that some games would not work with XP (clean install of XP btw), because they are so old. But others, such as splinter cell, now won't work as well.
I install the game, start to play it, and after a few minutes, every time, the game freezes, and I get a strange buzzing sounds come from my speakers. I have to restart. Other games just restart the computer, with no error message.
This happens with both online and offline games, patched and unpatched. The things is, this has only started to happen recently, I had no problems with this before. Can anyone help?
/edit I have tried this with my normal applications running in the background and all of them closed, no help either way.

You may have faulty memory, give them a check, otherwise you might try the compatability mode and run them under win98 or something. Hope this helps.

No, the system compatability doesn't make a difference, under any operating system, thanks anyway. How do I check my memory please? Noy sure how to do that.

I don't have a sound card, so it can't be that problem. however, I do have to download some audio codecs from the windowes update programme to get any sound, if that means anything to anybody. It is an CMI 8738/C3DX PCI audio device according to my system panel.

This might sound silly, but could the problem be that you don't have a sound card? Wouldn't new games require a sound card, or do they just need sound codecs to work, I don't know. Have you ever been able to play newish games on your current model?

My newest game is splinter cell, and that worked fine, without a sound card, until a week aso, when this problem started. In fact, it started after i installed a demo of freelancer from pc gamer. Maybe that could be at fault?

I think it might be a direct x problem, i had problems with freelancer until i got direct x 9 drivers for my gf4. What gfx card do you have and what version of direct x?
It might just be coincidence that it started when you got freelancer, but i doubt it, hmmm. well try that and see what happens and get back to us.

i am running under directx 9.0, with all my games patched up full, and i have also tried them un-patched. My gfx card is on the latest catalyst drivers, so that shouldn't be a problem.

maybe a simple solution
lo all, i've suffered the same problem playing numerous games just recently. itook off the side and hoovered out the insides of my comp. obviously turn it off first! i left the side off and it works fine again. it turned out to be an overheating comp problem, all you need is a cheap fan attached to the computer side to draw cold air in and hot air out. give it a try for the sake of 10 minutes cleaning. when you've finished cleaning leave the side off and it should work if it is a heat problem.
