Unhappy Can't Install Nvidia Drivers

Hi

Just replaced my last graphics card (ATI RAdeon 9600 - died on me after 5 years) and installing Nvidia Geforce fx 5200 128mb card in its place (same size). After removing 'old' drivers and installing card, Windows asks to install the drivers. CD is inserted and it chugs along, pulling through files. However it then says it can't install them. Tried to pull them off the disk direct, autorunning off the disk, forcing it to get them off the net, etc. Have disabled antivirus, etc just in case. No dice.

Before i put it through the wall, any suggestions please? Its not as if I've never installed a driver before, so losing the will to live!

I'm using a 5 year old system (Evesham) but original specced except for graphics card using dual 2.8Ghz processors, 1 Gb RAM, XP, 250Gb hard drive (which is only half full).

Thanks.

Thanks for that. Unfortuanately no luck using that either. And to make it worse, now when the computer boots up and asks for the driver disk, once you click next it just loops.

Am I in a bad place and can this be resolved without forking out on tech support?

Thanks.

Help!

Just an update. I am now back to being asked for the drivers each time and - after a while - the following message comes up: -

There was a problem installing this hardware.

Video Controler (VGA Compatible)

An error occurred during the installation of the device.

The data is invalid.

Not sure if this helps but desperate for an answer. Many thanks.

Please let me know if you need more to assist.

Follow up to this. Would reinstalling Windows XP help and, if so, do I need to back up my data before I do this?

Thanks.

Before you format your PC try this. Uninstall the video driver (make sure you have the latest driver saved to your desktop). Shutdown the PC. Remove the video card and reset it. Boot the PC and when you get prompted for a driver select NO.
Now run the nVida driver from your desktop and reboot once prompted.

Thanks for that Monty, will try. However, how do I reset the graphics card?

Sorry if this is a noob question.

Ah I think you meant reseat rather than reset. Will try that and report back.

Ran from desktop as suggested but no luck. Every time I start up after, it asks for the driver to be re-installed. And then I'm back where I started.

Thanks for the driver. Different to the one I picked up originally from the site but still doesn't work (in that it just asks for the driver again on boot up). I'd think it was the card but its the second i've used and both were different types (original 256Mb, current 128Mb).

Unless anyone has any other ideas, I will have to re-install XP (which I'm kinda avoiding because of the nause involved).

Thanks.

Finally solved this with a colleague. Actually nothing wrong with the card or the drivers but a problem with the registry. See the comphrehensive solution at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810509

Took seconds to download and fix (tiny file). And in case you have to work it out like us, the command is pnpreg -l which is a little 'L' not a '1'.

Hope this helps others and thanks for all your help to date.
