installed XP, lost all files and settings
I have installed a fresh version of xp onto my D drive instead of over the original 98se on my C drive as i was not getting very far due to a fatal error message appearing with 20 minutes of the install to go. I was unable to Cancel the install and it was recomended on another forum to install a fresh copy of XP else where. XP boots up just fine now from my D drive but i have lost all links to the files and programs that i have been using when i had 98 from my C drive. Everything on the desk top has gone and all the programs now don't work. There is no sign of the graphics card to allow my two screens and in fact everything has gone.
Is there any way of repairing the problem that i was having in the earlier post now that i am able to fire up the computer and get to all the folders on the system.
below is the original post and problem that started all this, any ideas would be most appreciated.
Hi,
I am in the middle of upgrading from 98 to XP home edition and all is going well in the setup process untill 'Finalizing installation' The green bar gets 1mm from the end and then the error starts. The error log i have copied out below but the program says if the error keeps occuring then cancel the XP upgrade after start up, but there is no option at tthis stage to cancel. The computer just restarts and then restarts the instilation. Please any ideas how to get out of this one would be most appreciated.
Error: Process User: can't copy default user hive C:\Documents and settings\Default User\ntuser.dat[ERROR=32[20h]]
Error:
W95UpgNT_Migrate: MigMain_Migrate failed [ERROR=32[20h]]
Error: Setup cannot upgrade some settings. After setup completes, you may need to reinstall one or more programes.[ERROR=32[20h]]
Fatal Error: Setup will now restart your computer and try agin. If this error continues to occur, select Cancel Windows XP Setup when the computer restarts.
Look forward to a reply.
cheers
