Problem with downloading Windows Updates for Windows XP

I wanted to download some updates for windows using the windows update website at microsoft. The problem is that I choose the right updates, and I click I accept to the terms, and then the window download screen comes up. It says its "Preparing to download....." and sits there. It doesn't do anything. I even left it on over night and it still didn't move. I've also selected random updates and it still doesn't work.

Under the Section entitled, "Problem Downloading/Installing a Software (Non-Driver) item", click the 3rd item down.

Send a message via MSN to snowmonkey
Please read the article by MS first, if it does apply to you then that's why you can't do an autoupdate:

I had the exact same problem but even worse. I could not download any updates and windows update would sit there, says downloading but not going a cm. I tryed everything, reinstalled internet explorer, windows troubleshooter, windows reinstall. These all didn't work and i had to format my computer to make the updates work. u might have to do that too!!
