Nasty critters tie up the PC

Hi all
My pal has got some nasties on his PC and although the PC will connect with the internet whatever virus he has got will not let Internet Explorer work, its just a blank page when opened, so he can't get any web sites.
I have deleted some of the obvious ones using HTJ, and Malware Bytes finds some infections when scanning but the program is stopped from deleting them when the scan is finished as it just freezes when I click the zap or quarentine button.
We would be grateful if anybody could suggest anything that I could download to my PC that might help zap the critters.
Regards Robert.

Hi, can he boot into safe mode with networking and try IE from there? He will need to save all his important files to a flash drive, cd ect as this may make the system unstable once we proceed.

just a thought, when you finished backing up your stuff switch system restore off too and do a rescan, the nasties could be from way back when thus preventing you from deleting them if their hiding behind a restore date.

We need to go through certain steps, as this is one of them but please wait before proceding as there needs to be a procedure in place.

Hi Guys
Thank's for your help, yes he can boot in safe mode so we will try another scan in SF, and hope that whatever it is does not stop the deletion, when we last did a scan it put a load of numbers up one was if I remember correctly!! "Pirate Bay toolbar" which I got rid of and 5 were Adware\Recycler\ ***** which I found in HKEY either Users or local M/c (can't remember), but when I tried to delete it I got a red X and a refusal to let me notice.
I am driving round this afternoon so we will try the safe mode first.
Many thanks and regards
Robert.

Hi, this needs to be followed.
1) save all files to another media
2) download and install http://www.malwarebytes.org/
3) boot into safe mode with networking
4) deleate all recent files and restore points (in accessories)
5) go to this site and run a full scan http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/ if any virus is found write down what the name is
6) run a full scan with malwarebytes
7) shut down PC then reboot into normal mode and run nod32 online scan again.
8) you may have to use HJT http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...ols/hijackthis

How did you go?

Hi again Monty
He ran M'bytes and SuperAntiSpyware scans in safe mode, one of which found a nastie which he zapped.(this took hours & I had to leave by then)
He has no Internet Explorer yet, although his modem icon shows packets sent and received so he is online, and while we were setting up a scan, a message flashed on saying "I Exp partially installed" so this morning he is uninstalling IE and then re-installing it again while I try to download the Eset Nod online scan to a flash drive.
If you are watching this Dave, we didn't succeed yesterday so I went for several pints!!!!
Regards Robert.

Hi
Just an update, I think we have got and zapped the rest of nasties by scanning in SF mode, the keyboard swapped itself to US but we found that and put it back te EN, a new internet connection has been made, but when he clicks onto Internet Explorer he just gets a blank page.
Regards Robert.
