Cannot run cmd.exe and command does not run any commands

Hi,

1) I can start command from Run->command. The dos prompt appears but it doesnt accept any commands. Whether I type cd.. or ping or ipconfig or dir the cursor simply comes to the next line. (Not even the bad command or file name) Its driving me mad.

2) When I try Start -> Run -> cmd I get an error similar to "Windows cannot find cmd. Please make sure you typed the name correctly or check the paths". Regedit also does not work.

I installed the latest version of Kaspersky Internet Sesurity suite and got no viruses or malwares

3)When I search the net for this error I have gone mad again that everyone is getting an error which states "windows cannot find <path> cmd.exe" but I'm not getting that error. I dont get the path.

4)I went to windows/system32 directly and double clicked on cmd.exe
Nothing happened. So I renamed it and windows soon replaced the file. I double clikced that too but nothing happened.

HEEEEEELP!!!

I think your system variable is not set properly.....you can add it yourself...here is some helpful links:

@ snowmonkey

Hi,

Thanks for replying. But I don't think its a problem with environment variables. Anyway I checked it with the links you sent. Besides if it had been a problem with the EV then opening cmd.exe manually would have worked.

But surprisingly I found that I have a file called as cmd.exe.exe and when I run this file I get a normal cmd prompt which seems to work fine. So I replaced cmd.exe with this file and tried running it (double clicked on cmd.exe) but still I got the same error "windows cannot find cmd.exe". But if I double cllick on cmd.exe.exe the cmd window opens up.

Does anyone have any idea about how to resolve this?
