Angry xp SP3 MCE won't record audio

My system has been working fine. Infrequently I use it to convert vinyl records to WAV files to put onto a CD. To do this a I use a Roland UA30 USB A/D converter.

Today when I went to record something, it wouldn't record.

The system is MCE 2005 with SP3. Since I don't use this record functionality all that often, I can't correlate this change to anything specific.

I use Cool Edit to record and edit the files. Cool Edit sees the UA30 and when I go to start a recording I select the record button but nothing happnens. Normally the counter will start right away. I also selected the on-board audio device and got the same results.

I then went to XP Sound Recorder and the exact same symptoms exist.

It's an MSI MB with Intel processor. ATI 9600pro and a pinnacle tuner card which I have disabled.

It's as though XP isn't starting some generic process when I select record.

Any help is appreciated.
